What is Wrong with the UEFA Champions League

One more day left in he Champions League Group Stage and almost everything is settled except for Groups G and H. Porto a Portuguese powerhouse just needs a win at home over Leicester City and Sevilla just needs a tie in France when they play Lyon.

Outside of placeing, everything is done and dusted. What has became a trend in the last few years has became UEFA's worst nightmare this year as the group stage has been anything but dramatic. \

The best thing about sport, and maybe sport tournaments is the opportunity for Cinderellas to surprise and make a big run in the tournament. Most notably this happens in March Madness, like in 2006 when George Mason came out of nowhere to get to the Final Four.

In a way, the UEFA Champions League resembles quite a bit. There are 55 countries in UEFA compared to the 32 conferences NCAA basketball has. In Champions League, each country gets a different number of allocated berths similarly to March Madness.

However, the one key difference is parity. Right now, the parity level in European soccer is at a all time low. There hasn't been a Cinderella in the Champions League since Galatasaray   a Turkish power surprised everyone after advancing to the Quarterfinals in the 2012-2013 Champions League season. Over the years previously, there has been a Cinderella every 2-3 years or so. Unfortunately, lately it has become rarer as the years have gone on.

In fact, the last time a team outside the big four countries ( Spain, Germany, England and Italy) was the 2004-05 competition when PSV Eindhoven the dutch team narrowly missed out on getting to the final.

Again, over the years there has been a big dominance of power in from the Top three leagues.

This is part of the reason the Champions League has became "boring" over the years. It has been a for gone conclusion that one of four teams will win the Champions League. One of the three heavyweights or Bayern Munich.

Why is this the case? Like the NBA, the Champions League is also a steep gap between the rich and the poor and that doesn't give dark horses much of a chance.

There are two reasons why we have seen a decreasing number of small teams having success in the UEFA Champions League.

The first reason is the super team affect. Teams like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Athletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Arsenal all have super amazing teams when it comes to the UEFA Champions League Group Stage. The problem is, I just named five teams that dominate. The thing is there are only eight groups so the likely hood of being paired with one of those teams is over 50% Therefore, if your a Dinamo Zagreb or Legia Warsaw that are a in the Group stage due to overachieving, qualifying for the knockout stage is next to impossible especially when it's hard to collect maximum points at home.

Futhermore, another change that was hindered the chance of any dark horses is the new draw format. As of last year, the champions from the top seven leagues were automatically put in Pot one. While this has been beneficial to teams like Benfica and Paris Saint-Germain, it has had a negative consequence on the teams happy to be there like Copenhagen and Ludogorets Razgrad because the potential is there to be placed with both Arsenal and Real Madrid and that leads to groups almost being over before they even get started.

Changes are coming starting in the fall of 2018, what it will mean to the smaller teams in the smaller countries is unclear right now.

What's wrong is the Champions League Group stage is too easy to predict. The last time a team outside of the Big three countries was 2004 when Porto won it all. At this point, Porto making the Final let alone the Semi Finals seems like a pipe dream right now.

Is there a Conspricy Theory with the Canucks and Maple Leafs?

For the last few years or so, when the Toronto Maple Leafs come out west to play against Vancouver, the Canucks get the short end of the stick.

That's because, the NHL or Hockey Night in Canada has decided to slot the Canucks - Leafs game that is played in Vancouver to be played during the Four o'clock window more commonly known as the first game of CBC's double hitter.

Unsurprisingly, the reaction of the Vancouverites over the last few years starts with a C and ends with a Y.

That word is conspiracy. Conspiracy is defined in the dictionary as "an evil, unlawful, treacherous, or surreptitious plan formulated in secret by two or more persons; plot." By the definition, Canucks fans will always wonder if they are having secrets kept against them but at the end of the day, this is a East Coast Bist thing.

To continue, when the game starts at 4pm, the Leafs have the advantage because they don't have to adjust their body clocks. For instance, instead of the game being played at 10 o'clock body time, they are playing at 7, the time Maple Leafs players are used to.

Inversely, with the game starting at 4pm it sets the Canucks players timing off because they are not used to playing at 4pm local time. This gives Vancouver a disadvantage in a home game that they should have a advantage for.

This is where the conspiracy part comes in for Vancouver as they feel their at a disadvantage right from the start with Eastern Conference teams having way less travel on top of the other advantages.

For those who are unaware, Toronto wants to be Canada's version of New York and Vancouver wants to be the West Coast version of Toronto. Canucks fans hate the Leafs fans for rubbing their 13 Stanley Cups into Vancouver's face even though their last triumph happened in 1967.

On the other hand, Leaf fans hate Vancouver for their dominance from 2003-2013 despite coming away with zero Stanley Cups to show for it.

The rivalry is fierce and  heated and lately, the only thing that the two cities can agree on is that the Bluejays are the best. This will be the last time these two teams hook up this year. If they hook up again in June, we will have one unforgettable and unlikely Stanley Cup  Final.

Week 12 NFL Picks

Thanksgiving is always the trigger that means its the start of the playoff races have began in the NFL to see what teams will advance to the playoffs this January.

No more byes. Every team has played 10 games and things are shaping up to be a great finish. Here is the schedule for Week 12:

Vikings vs Lions

Tomorrow's early game could decide the division. The Lions stole a win in Minnesota earlier this year and look for the Vikings to return the favor tomorrow. Vikings 16-12

Redskins VS Cowboys

I toyed with picking an upset in this game but I decided to make the easy pick and pick the 10-1 home team from Dallas. They will overcome a slow start and win 28-17.

Steelers VS Colts

A Thursday night game on NBC to end the night. Look for Luck to rip the Steelers secondary to pieces in a 38-24 Colts win.

Titans VS Bears

The Bears are terrible, the Titans need this win after last weeks loss. Titans 23-6

Jags VS Bills

The Bills have showed promise this year with some good wins and some close defeats. They win this week easily. 33-13 Bills.

Bengals VS Ravens

Ravens put a nail in the coffin for the Bengals season as they would fall to 3-7-1 with a loss. Ravens squeak out a 20-13 win.

Cardinals VS Falcons

Battle of the bird and the Falcons will add to the Cardinals misery this year. Falcons win 34-23.

Giants vs Browns

Will the Browns go to 0-11? It's likely as the Giants have won 5 in a row. Giants 26-14.

Rams VS Saints

Two struggling teams under the Super Dome in New Orleans. Saints get back to their winning ways with a 35-21 win over the Rams.

49ers VS Dolphins

The surging Dolphins swim to a easy win over the 49ers this week, the Niners season can't end soon enough at 1-9 and soon to be 1-10. 34-3 Dolphins

Chargers VS Texans

The Chargers have had heartbreaking loss after heart breaking loss this year. Why would things change because Thanksgiving will be behind us on Sunday? 20-17 Texans

Seahawks vs Buccaneers

If the Bucs played every game on the road this year, they would be a playoff team. But that is not reality. This week the Seahawks will be the beneficiary of Tampa Bay's home woes with a easy win.
Seahawks 20-3

Panthers VS Raiders

Do the Raiders have a let down after their trip to Mexico City? I don't think so but the Panthers will give the Raiders a good run before Oakland escapes with a 23-20 OT win.

Patriots VS Jets

New England will flex there muscles after the Jets hang around for a quarter and a half. Patriots 34-17

Chiefs VS Broncos

Kansas City rebounds after a bad home loss against Tampa Bay. They shutdown the Peyton Manningless Broncos in a key divisional game.  Chiefs 20-14

Packers VS Eagles

The Packers have proved that their deflated defense is garbage and that will continue on Monday night when they soar to a 38-26 win.
