What Will Edmonton Winning the Cup mean for Canucks Fans?

This is really hard to put into words because as a kid growing up Edmonton was the little team that could and make a Cup appearance in 2006 and slowly transitioned to a team that was so discombobulated from 2007-2014.

Until McDavid arrived and they overnight became the most obnoxious fanbase in the NHL.

In contrast, the Canucks were the model Canadian franchise from 2001-2013 and it was in 2013 is when I think everything went haywire.

They extended the Sedins which was for me questionable at the time (And I have proof with a Facebook status). 2014 would have been the end of their contract and pivoting and going for a bottom 3 team in 2015 would have been achievable. This year happened to be McDavid's draft.

Instead, they show loyalty and become a veteran team with Ryan Miller and Radim Virbata additions.

For me, I could see that the 2015 team was the last dance to the point where in February and March of that year I was stressing to people that narrowly missing the playoffs would be catastrophic. I have more Facebook proof.

Long story short the Canucks started bad habits of thinking they were going to be able to strategically rebuild this Canucks team and they went to the 2016 Draft wanting to build their team from the goalie out which in fairness is a reasonable approach. However, where they went wrong is within the Top 8 you really need to draft best available player which was Matthew Tkachuk.

I believe after getting Hughes in 2018 they kinda played themselves out of rebuild and they were officially out of a rebuild when they traded for J.T. Miller in 2019.

Since than the Canucks have desperately trying to fix the errors of 2014-2016 which set the team back to the point they couldn't make up their mind if they wanted to contend or not.

To me Quinn Hughes covers up a multitude of bad moves from 2014-2016. However the trade that is really costing Vancouver right now is the OEL and Garland trade because they gave up a 1st round pick who would probably be on the roster right now earning a entry level salary which if a Centre could nullify the big whole at 2C.

So if Edmonton wins the Cup this week I feel these blunders are magnified more because Vancouver took Edmonton to 7 last year.

Instead,  fans want to keep blaming Petterson and Loui Eriksson for an inconsistent decade. Instead lets blame not drafting Matthew Tkachuk and extending the Sedins. Just a thought.

The ownership almost deserves it's own blog post as I wouldn't be surprised if he told Mike Gillis to extend the twins.

If Edmonton doesn't win the Cup its no harm no foul. Edmonton is one of the most exciting teams in hockey history and most fanbases are jealous right now.

The Canucks have simply mismanaged assets. The Podkolzin trade is just as bad as extending the twins in my opinion.

Having Podkolzin's name on the Cup should sting for real Canucks fans but I see too many fans cheering for Edmonton because they are in Canada.

It just doesn't make sense.
