Later today I am going to be watching the New York Mets visit the Baltimore Orioles. The Mets might have weathered a rocky road last month and sit just one game back of the Phillies who are out west playing the Giants at 9:45 ET tonight.
Despite the Mets willingness to put a World Series contender on the field the last 10 years, the Mets still only have one division title to show for it in 2015. 2017-2019 proved to be the mediocre baseball that existed for the large part of the 2000's.
However, since the ownership change before 2021, the Mets have been a much dangerous team. They are 342-306 entering this year. Add that to the 52-39 this year and they are a 394-345 record under Steve Cohen.
The success can't all be contributed to Cohen as it takes awhile to put your stamp on things but he has proven to spend the money when needed.
The Mets next step should be to acquire a future Hall of Famer pitcher that can go out there and start a Game 1 or Game 7 of a NLCS. Despite the stellar rotation this year, the Mets don't have a future HOF'mer on the roster. Heartbreakingly, Griffin Canning is on the IL and will not pitch the rest of the year.
Slot | Pitcher | Throws | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1️⃣ | Clay Holmes | R | Reliable veteran, currently leading the staff |
| 2️⃣ | David Peterson | L | Solid lefty presence, has been steady in recent outings |
| 3️⃣ | Justin Hagenman | R | Newer face in the rotation, showing promise |
| 4️⃣ | Frankie Montas | R | Recently returned from injury, still finding rhythm |
| 5️⃣ | Kodai Senga | R | On the IL but expected back soon—could slot in by mid-July |
Holmes and Senga when healthy are trustworthy but it puts a lot of pressure on Peterson to go out and deliver. Peterson is clinging on to his 3.18 ERA but can be inconsistent.
I don't think they win the NL East without a deadline addition.
