The Padres are in the basement of the NL West this year and things look pretty bleak for San Diego long term as I would describe the Padres as a organization going through a dark cloud of smoke that was left behind from the Charges bolting to L.A.
The two are not related, but the takeaway fro this last weekend was the fan base doesn't care anymore. I was at Saturday's game against Arizona when they lost 9-4 and Monday against San Fran when they fell 5-3 in 12 innings.
Both were good games but the crowd wasn't on the edge of their seat very much. It looked like fans went to the game to have a good time, not to see the Padres win.
This is a team that started 1-6 and has never recovered. They haven't been over 500 since 2015.
The only glimpse of hope is their Farm system ranking of third according to MLB.com. Time will tell if that is good enough alone.
A 12 year Postseason drought is almost at the tipping point where a team falls into the Dysfunctional category that becomes harder to break through after that.
If anything, it had me thinking, why do some of the best ballparks in the majors have some pretty bad teams. Seattle, Pittsburgh, Kansas City. Some of those teams have came around but honestly, the Padres look like where the Mariners were in 2006. The thing is, the Mariners haven't made the playoffs for awhile either.
A full rebuild, should only take 5 years. The Houston Astros proved that by winning the World Series last year.
This dilemma that San Diego baseball team is going through definitely has ignited a flame under myself to start watching baseball games even when the team isn't in the hunt. The right now, San Diego is known for their city not their baseball.
