In my lifetime of being a New York Mets fan, high expectations have always been held in notable players being brought in to try save a sinking ship.
To be fair, it has worked in the likes of Mike Pizza, Carlos Beltran and Yoenis Cespedes all of which played in the NLCS but others such as Carlos Delgado and Jason Bay weren't so lucky.
Over the next few years, we will find out if Robinson Cano falls into the first category or the second. I'm afraid to make a prediction but the Mets have a window that is closing quickly if they can't add to their current core.
Yoenis Cespedes is 34, Robinson Cano is 37 and this is a team that can't count on a strong starting pitching rotation forever. At peak potential, the Mets bullpen is also strong with the addition of Dellin Betances which feels like years ago.
The biggest question among every team right now is will a 60 game season benefit them or not. As for the Mets, I think they have the pieces in place to make a charge. A 60 game season means that the button pushing will start earlier and starting pitching and bullpen should be astronomically way more important in then in past years.
For the Mets, their bullpen was mindboggling horrible last year and the team managed to scrape by with a 86-76 year.
We have a starting rotation that fingers crossed stays healthy has DeGrom, Stroman, Matz, Wacha and Porcello. All have stuff that if they produce strong years they can position the Mets to put them in thick of things for the division title.
To add to all this, the Mets have a number of strong hitters that could possibly play DH. This won't be true for every team and this should play into the Mets favor.
With the Washington Nationals possibly due for a hangover from winning the world series, the Mets seem like a great value bet to win the NL East division title.
So please baseball gods, please let this season start and finish without any complications. We already lost the 1994 World Series, lets not have another one canceled.
